I have since moved around resulting in changing studios to practice many times. When I moved to the area I looked for a studio, tried a few but they simply weren’t TYR.  One class and I knew I was home. I found a place in which the was no ego but an eagerness to share and see your students grow. As a whole and individually everyone receives attention, the attention needed to feel noticed, maybe  resulting in motivation a little extra push needed, it gives us a community. This place reminds me of why I fell in love with practicing to begin with.

How has The Yoga Roots had an impact on your life: Oh my Stars! I came to Yoga Roots after a pain management doctor basically told me that at my age, back pain is a normal occurrence in life. He did offer me physical therapy and pain medications. I didn’t want meds and physical therapy. Though physical therapy is effective for many conditions, I could not see myself for the next 50 years (I plan to live to at least 100) doing the same set of 5 exercises. That would be like eating the same 5 food dishes for the rest of your life. Boring! When I found Yoga Roots, I found something better than drugs. But it was a process. When I began yoga, just lying on my back in savasana was painful. Now savasana is the best part of every class, especially at the end of Ann’s class :) . I have a long way to go, but I’ve come so far. I am very grateful for each instructor’s torture (I mean instruction): it is making me stronger mentally and physically.

Whats your professional life?: I’m transitioning from bedside nursing to public health. I want everyone to have the possibility for a healthy life free from disparities that limit their potential. Public health is my pathway to those goals, so I’m back at school and looking for a new job.

When I was little I wanted to be: When I was little, I just floated through life without a true career dreams. It wasn’t until my 20s that I realized that the lack of professional goals was taking me no where that I wanted to be. Nursing came about because the only way to advance at that particular organization was to sleep with the boss. Beyond the immorality of it, I didn’t think he was cute. I also hate being out of breathe (definitely not a runner) so yoga has helped me regulate my breathe. It’s played a role with aligning my chakras in a fun way as well. I can tell what my body needs now this helps as I am turning 40 in October. Lastly, I have a torn labrum in my right shoulder from an old injury, which is what started my yoga journey. How has The Yoga Roots had an impact on your life: Starting yoga with TYR was really a blessing in disguise for me. In 2016, I had major life changes…I got married, bought a house and was about to graduate with my Masters. My anxiety was so bad that I couldn’t leave my house. I was never into yoga and thought it was weird haha. As a last resort I tried this thing called yoga that I heard could help with anxiety. Since I was terrified to leave the house, my husband would take me to classes and wait outside for me (I’d look out the TYR windows on the BLVD to make sure I could see his truck parked out there). Yoga with TYR was the only thing that really helped decrease that level of anxiety for me. So much peace, love, and good vibes from all the instructors <3 So thankful TYR helped me get through that time in my life and now I can’t go without yoga! I just had twins in January of this year and I’m glad yoga is still here…helping me find myself again. THANK YOU Shannon and TYR!

How long have you practiced at TYR: I took my first TYR class (and first yoga class ever) in 2016, but didn’t start consistently going until 2017. So about 5 years.

How has The Yoga Roots had an impact on your life: Working in construction all my adult life I had ended up with some injuries. You know, the usual back and knee stuff. Not having any interest in shots and surgeries, I was ripe for a solution. All I needed was a sign. Shannon and I did not know each other, but we were neighbors. I’d drive by her house everyday and see all the cars parked out front in the evening. Shannon started this deal in her garage… Awesome, right! I thought it was a bible study!

One day I saw that sign. No literally, I looked down Shannons drive and I saw “The Yoga Roots” sign. And, blamo! I was hooked from day one. I found doing yoga to be an amazing work out and stress reliever. I started attending regularly. After, a few months all my aches and pains subsided. Since, then, yoga and ’The Roots’ has grown into an important part my human maintenance plan. It covers so many bases. It’s exercise, meditation, detox and spirituality all rolled into one. Not to mention a positive and welcoming community that has boosted my self-confidence and turned me into a much more positive person. Props to Shannon for planting and watering such a beautiful community that has become a key ingredient to my continual personal growth. I know many of you feel the same:-)

How has The Yoga Roots had an impact on your life: The Yoga Roots has been integral in multiple facets of my life over the past few years. I tried yoga for the first time over 15 years ago, and I was hooked from day one. It just speaks to me- the same as any other workout might, for others. I've done many different styles- heated is one of my favorite variations. These days, my practice helps me de-stress more than anything. I get busy (who doesn't?), and don't practice occasionally- I always miss it terribly. I have alot of respect for the yogis who are able to make time for practice on the daily. The yoga roots has helped strengthen my practice and strangely enough- test the limits of my shell. I'm naturally a more inward, quiet individual, which may read as aloof or closed off to others.
